Master of Theology

The Master of Theology Degree (ThM) is an advanced, research-oriented graduate program in theology. It allows students to concentrate on a chosen theological discipline and includes a thesis on one aspect of theology. The ThM builds on the first graduate-level theological degree, normally the MDiv or the MTS.

The ThM is intended for candidates who…

  • may later pursue studies at the doctoral level,
  • desire to teach formally,
  • desire scholarly enhancement of their priestly or ministerial practice, or
  • are interested in personal theological and spiritual enrichment.

The ThM is a 24-credit-hour advanced master’s degree program designed to be completed full-time in one year or part-time. Students complete 18 credits of coursework and two required thesis courses (6 credits). The four primary areas of study in the Online ThM program include:

  • Biblical (Old and New Testament),
  • Historical (Church History and Patristics),
  • Systematic (Dogmatics and Ethics), and
  • Practical (Liturgics, Canon Law, and Pastoral Theology).

While the program is of particular interest to Orthodox students who have received their first graduate theological degrees from Orthodox theological schools in the United States and abroad, it welcomes all qualified applicants.

ThM Degree in Two Modalities

HCHC offers the ThM program in two modalities: online and on-campus in Brookline, MA just outside Boston.

On-campus ThM Program

For those prospective students who are able to study at our campus just outside of Boston, Holy Cross delivers an advanced theological education within an Orthodox liturgical community. The program delivers its courses in classrooms and through directed studies with professors within an Orthodox community. Students can choose from a wide array of advanced theological courses, including courses through the Boston Theological Interreligious Consortium comprised of ten theological institutions of higher learning in the Boston area.

The Online ThM Program

The online program delivers its courses through a combination of asynchronous and synchronous experiences, allowing the student the flexibility to work at their own pace and within their life’s schedule. By offering this degree online, HCHC expands its reach to prospective students and clergy who are not able to pursue a degree on the Brookline campus.
